In late August the Western Climate Initiative—eight western U.S. states and Canadian provinces, including Arizona, British Columbia, California, Manitoba, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Washington—adopted a regional, economy-wide greenhouse gas emissions target. These states aim by 2020 to reduce emissions of six primary greenhouse gases by 15% below 2005 levels. Within one year, a market-based system—such as a cap-and-trade program covering multiple economic sectors—will be designed to help meet this goal. A year, obviously, is not a very long time.
The Western Climate Initiative is itself merely the latest contribution to the greenhouse gas emission regime being erected across the West, following enactment last year of California's Senate Bill 1368. Collectively, these regulatory efforts will heavily impact a variety of Western businesses, although most significantly for the electric power and the real estate development industries.
Not only will the webinar provide presentations on these subjects, but will also will provide an interactive opportunity for the participants to get specific questions addressed.
