PORTLAND - Stoel Rives LLP, a full-service business law firm, is pleased to announce the firm has been named one of the 100 Best Green Companies to Work for in Oregon by Oregon Business magazine. This recognition is based on the magazine's annual 100 Best Companies to Work for in Oregon as determined by an anonymous employee survey and an independent assessment of the employers' sustainability practices. Over 500 companies participated and more than 26,000 employees completed the survey.
"This recognition is a tribute to the passion and commitment of the 400 people in our Portland office who have worked hard to make us a sustainable business," said Wally Van Valkenburg, managing partner of the Stoel Rives Portland office. "We are particularly proud to be one of the 100 Best Green Companies not only because of what it says about us, but because many of our clients are leaders in sustainability as well."
"We've been trying to push the market with our sustainability efforts," said Mark Morford, partner and chair of the firm's Go Green Committee. "For example, we encourage recycling and composting by taking away everyone's desk-side trash cans." Other commitments include the firm's membership of the EPA's Green Power Partnership, an association of businesses and government entities that get part of their energy from renewable sources. The firm is the largest purchaser of renewable energy among all U.S. law firms in the association. Stoel Rives also purchases Renewable Energy Credits to offset 60 percent of its firmwide electricity usage in seven states, one of only six law firms in the nation earning the "Leader" designation. Additionally, employees of Stoel Rives are encouraged to reduce car travel by receiving firm subsidized transit passes and a stipend for walking or biking. Employees are also encouraged to participate in the Stoel Rives P2 Sustainability certification program which emphasizes incorporating sustainability principals into personal and professional life.
The Stoel Rives P2 Sustainability certification program is designed to encourage and recognize firm personnel for adopting and engaging in personal and professional activities that will reduce their individual earth impact, and the firm's overall earth impact. The firm's Go Green campaign and the Stoel Rives P2 Sustainability certification program provides employees with information and they are recognized for conserving energy, supporting clean energy production, reducing waste, utilizing mass transit, selecting environmentally friendly vendors and products, and incorporating other responsible environmentally sustainable behaviors into their lifestyles in the office and at home.
